Tom Holland is looking back on the infamous 2019 Marvel/Sony split which saw Spider-Man exiting the MCU when the entities couldn’t come to a new agreement regarding the rights to the character. The issue was resolved after a month and a lot of social media flack and that allowed Spider-Man to play in the MCU again. Now that he has had some time and distance from that time period, Holland is revealing that following the initial split, he pitched a few ideas for the character’s future.
In an interview with “Empire” to promote Spider-Man: No Way Home, Holland looked back on the split and revealed that on the heels of the announcement he went to Sony’s Amy Pascal’s house to talk about the future of the character and apparently that included pitching ideas for both Venom and Kraven The Hunter movies. Here is what Holland had to say:
“On the day that the announcement happened that I would no longer be in the MCU… I just drove over to Amy Pascal’s house and sat with her by her pool, and we sat there for hours, just chatting, and pitching movies. How would we do a film without Marvel? Does Peter Parker fall through a portal, and then he’s in the Venom world? Or do we do a Kraven the Hunter film? It was a nice distraction… because as a young kid I was so in love with Marvel, and I was so lucky to be a part of it that when they took the rug from under my feet, I was not ready to say goodbye yet.”
It would be cool to know his specific ideas for any of those films but it seemed like he was just spitballing ideas to see how his version of the character could continue with Sony and without Marvel. Since Sony does hold the rights to Venom and Kraven The Hunter, it makes sense that including Spider-Man in that world, if they had to, would be the most logical choice. Thankfully, Holland and Sony didn’t have to explore those ideas because the two entities eventually came to an agreement to keep Spider-Man in the MCU.
Sony’s Venom films have gone on to be big box office successes, with the second film recently scoring the biggest opening of the year and the pandemic with its $90 million debut. That film’s post-credits scene interconnects Sony’s Spider-Man Universe with the MCU so it’s more proof that Sony and Marvel have figured out a way to make this all work. As for Kraven The Hunter, a film featuring the titular character is in the works with Aaron Taylor-Johnson taking on the lead role. Arriving before Kraven The Hunter is Jared Leto in Morbius which I’m sure will do more to connect the universes in small or possibly larger ways.
What do YOU hope to see from Sony’s Spider-Man Universe and its connection to the MCU?
