After winning us over with his brief but memorable appearance in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, I doubt that many of us would object to seeing Tom Holland as Spidey for the foreseeable future. If it was up to Tom Holland however, he would keep playing Spider-Man for a very long time. The young actor spoke with Empire recently and explained that he's already pitched the idea to executives.
Peter Parker is a character we see [in the comic books] as a 15-year-old boy and then as a 35-year-old man. So I have an idea of what I'd like to do, and I've pitched it and it's already been taken into the boardroom. It would be really cool if it pans out, because it means I would be Spider-Man for a very long time.
I can't even imagine where the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be in twenty years, but it would certainly be interesting to witness Tom Holland grow into the role over such a long time. There's obviously no guarantee that Holland will stick with the role for that long, hell, for all we know, Sony will be on their tenth reboot of Spider-Man by then. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige isn't in a hurry to see someone else take on the role either as he teased the potential of a three-film arc. "Harry Potter became the example, though Peter's clearly not as young as Harry was in the first film. There's certainly a fun potential three-film structure that can be had, between sophomore, junior and senior year."
Speaking of Kevin Feige and ol' Web-head, we all know that Marvel has been able to use the character thanks to a partnership with Sony, but, in an interview with Perception co-founder Jeremy Lasky, Feige said that his grand plan would be to hopefully see all of Marvel's wayward heroes back under one roof at some point in the future.
My goal is to replicate the experience that comic book fans have reading the books up on the screen, and we’ve been able to accomplish that beyond my wildest dreams over the last ten years. And certainly, including Spidey in Civil War and the upcoming Infinity War, is yet another dream that I didn’t even dare to talk about publicly because I thought the odds of it were very slim. So, no plans beyond that right now for the few remaining characters that aren’t already in the MCU, but I always say never say never. Who knows what can happen in the future?
Although Marvel now has control over the vast majority of their characters, there are still several notable properties outside their jurisdiction, the biggest of which would be the FANTASTIC FOUR and X-MEN franchises, both owned by Twentieth Century Fox. Of the two, I would put my money on FANTASTIC FOUR becoming a part of the MCU before X-MEN, unless Fox somehow knocks it out of the park with their third attempt at bringing Marvel's first family to the big-screen. As Feige said, never say never.
SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING will swing into theaters on July 7, 2017.
