Last week video game fans got the announcement they’ve been waiting for: Nathan Drake has been cast for the UNCHARTED movie, and the lucky actor is Tom Holland. When one door closes another one opens, and now the next big piece of casting involves Drake’s loyal companion – Victor “Sully” Sullivan. Who will play the cigar-munching treasure hunter is up in the air, but Holland himself has a few recommendations:
During an interview with Yahoo the actor rattled off a few names for who he thinks should play Drake’s mentor, and both of them are two of the hottest names in the business right now:
I think Jake Gyllenhaal could be really cool. But I went to the Jurassic World film set the other day to see my friend who is directing it, and Chris Pratt is on that film, who I’ve become very good friends with.I think [Chris Pratt] would be a great Sully.” It’s worth that mentioning that, were it not an origin story, Holland says Chris Pratt would be perfect for Drake himself. Having said that, who’s better to teach Tom Holland’s Drake how to be a smarmy little so-and-so than Chris Pratt? And I mean that in the best possible way.
The casting of Holland left many fans scratching their heads, given that the character of Drake is noticeably older than Holland. But it all started to make sense considering the movie will act as a sort of origin story, featuring a young Drake and how he meets Sully. Therefore, the latter will most likely be an actor in his late 30s or early 40s, so Pratt and Gyllenhaal aren't exactly unfathomable choices. Pratt of course will join the young actor in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, so the bond is already there if a case were to be made for him.
As much as I love me some Pratt and Gyllenhaal I can’t say I can see them in the role. They’re too much of leading men to let Holland be the hero while they hang back and play the mentor. Frankly, I can’t really think of anyone who simply pops out for me. If I had to pick, I’d say someone like Ron Perlman could be up to the task, but given the timeline they’re going for he may be too old. But hey, I ain’t no fancy casting director, so don’t ask me.
UNCHARTED is being planned for a 2018 or 2019 release, and catch Holland in SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING in theaters July 7.
