Tom Hardy has done everything from sports drama (WARRIOR) to sci-fi (INCEPTION), however there's one genre the actor isn't planning on returning to anytime soon: romantic comedies.
In an interview with USA Today, Hardy said "I love to do things I hadn't done before," which may explain why he starred in McG's THIS MEANS WAR. But Hardy goes on to say he didn't enjoy working on the film, and because of that, doesn't think he'll appear in another rom-com again.
I didn't understand how you could do something which is so much fun and be so miserable doing it…I probably won't do a romantic comedy again, do you know what I mean?
Although THIS MEANS WAR did gross over $150 million worldwide, it received horrible reviews, and is in fact Tom Hardy's lowest reviewed movie (according to Rotten Tomatoes) besides DOT THE I. Tom Hardy's THE DROP director Michael R. Roskam was there during the interview, and after asking the actor "So you won't do mine?" Hardy said "With you, it would be different!"
While I don't think it's fair for Tom Hardy to blame romantic comedies themselves for his bad experience with the McG film, I also think he's too good of an actor to be working on projects like THIS MEANS WAR. It is possible to make a great romantic comedy, but just like every other type of film, it needs a solid cast, director and script. Hardy shouldn't completely write off rom-coms, but for now I'm glad he's avoiding the genre.
