Tom Hardy is a great actor. The guy is a chameleon and has done everything from play the craziest inmate in England (BRONSON) to a Batman villain (THE DARK KNIGHT RISES) and beyond. But, this summer's MAD MAX: FURY ROAD represents the first major franchise lead role for the actor and it looks spectacular. Each trailer we have seen has topped the previous one and is renewing interest in the decades old franchise that has always been associated with star Mel Gibson. If the massive MAD MAX: FURY ROAD can deliver at the box office, the series could go forward with Tom Hardy's name on our minds before Gibson.
In an interview with Esquire UK, Hardy discussed the role.
As for the pressure, Hardy says it’s enormous. “I’ve never been more excited and out of my comfort zone.” He’s seen the film, and says it’s “fucking unbelievable”. He’s attached to a further three Mad Max films, though as he says, “Everything’s based on figures and how things are perceived. Inevitably it’s a business.”
That's right, three more sequels. Granted, an R-rated movie has to make a pretty penny at the box office to warrant a sequel. There is also the fact that the production ran long and exceeded the $100 million budget significantly. Director George Miller is also not known for being prolific with his films having helmed ten movies in 35 years. But, Warner Bros is banking on MAD MAX: FURY ROAD to be more than a one-trick pony, so there is hope that those sequels could come to fruition.
What is more exciting is Hardy's reaction to the film. Not one to quibble as he has questioned the quality of some of his prior films like THIS IS WAR, Hardy seems to be very excited about how good MAD MAX: FURY ROAD is going to be. I just hope he is right.
MAD MAX: FURY ROAD opens on the lovely date of May 15th.
