Tom Hanks may star in a Cold War thriller for director Steven Spielberg

Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg have teamed up for some pretty iconic projects ranging from SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, CATCH ME IF YOU CAN, and THE TERMINAL to producing projects like BAND OF BROTHERS and THE PACIFIC. The two have long maintained a personal and professional friendship that looks to be headed once more to the big screen. On top of the recent news that Spielberg is once again eying ROBOPOCALYPSE as well as religious drama THE KIDNAPPING OF EDGARDO MORTARA but now he may be considering a third film.

Variety reports that Hanks and Spielberg are looking to work together on a new thriller set during the Cold War. Hanks would take the lead and Spielberg would direct, marking their fourth collaboration in that manner.

Based on the true story revolving around James Donovan (Hanks), a prominent American attorney enlisted by the CIA during the Cold War to slip behind the iron curtain to negotiate the release of a pilot captured when his U-2 spy plane was shot down over Russia.

Spielberg may seem to be pulling a Guillermo Del Toro by over-developing projects that never come to fruition, but Variety states that the prospect of working with Hanks again may boost the likelihood of this project. So far, their films together have wildly vacillated in scope, tone, and style, but each film has been enjoyable in it’s own way. A new Spielberg film is always welcome, in my opinion, I just hope he chooses which one to make soon.
