Actor, icon and harsh critic of his own masterful filmography, Tom Hanks is setting about on yet another venture: writing a novel. Tom Hanks will release his debut novel, The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece, in May 2023.
The book, published by Penguin Random House, is “about the making of a star-studded, multimillion-dollar superhero action film . . . and the humble comic books that inspired it.” Per the official publisher site, the novel will span numerous decades, jumping from a post-WWII solider in the 1940s to his nephew creating a comic book in the 1970s to a director adapting said comic book for the big screen in the present day.
Tom Hanks pulled partly from his own experiences in Hollywood. “Every character in the book does something I’ve experienced while making a movie, as well as discovered a philosophy or learned an important lesson…Even the foolish moments are some kind of stunt I’ve pulled or mistake I’ve survived.”
The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece will also include three comic books created by Hanks himself, one of which is the work featured throughout the novel. The novel itself is listed at 448 pages.
The novel is not Tom Hanks’ first foray into the literary world. A typewriter enthusiast, Hanks released a collection of short stories called Uncommon Type–all featuring a typewriter in some capacity–in 2018.
Earlier this year, Tom Hanks also helped launch Hanx101, an app-based trivia game. So yeah, he’s been a little busy. This year, he has already co-starred in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis and Robert Zemeckis’ Pinocchio. Marc Foster’s A Man Called Otto is set for a December release.
Tom Hanks’ debut novel, The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece, hit shelves on May 9, 2023.
