Tom Hanks is attached to a new project and it will reunite him with one of his directors from CLOUD ATLAS. Deadline is reporting that the actor and Tom Tykwer will be bringing Dave Eggers' A Hologram for the King to the big screen. The novel (adapted by Tykwer) was a National Book Award finalist. Here's a synopsis from Amazon:
In a rising Saudi Arabian city, far from weary, recession-scarred America, a struggling businessman named Alan Clay pursues a last-ditch attempt to stave off foreclosure, pay his daughter's college tuition, and finally do something great. In A Hologram for the King, Dave Eggers takes us around the world to show how one man fights to hold himself and his splintering family together.
I haven't read the book but I'm a little interested in checking it out. I looked up some reviews and they've been pretty good. I've seen a few people describing Alan Clay (who Tom Hanks will be playing) as a "sad sack" type and one person said the novel is like "OFFICE SPACE on downers." To me it also sounds like something Alexander Payne would direct.
If the book has some dark business humor with Tom Hanks front and center I'm game. Hell, I'll watch anything with Hanks in it anyway but A HOLOGRAM FOR THE KING has the potential to be a very good movie.
