We’re on the cusp of a brave new world, a world in which Tom Cruise will head to the International Space Station to shoot a movie with director Doug Liman. It was announced over two years ago that Cruise would be journeying into the final frontier, but he may be doing even more than that. While speaking with the BBC, Universal Pictures chairwoman Donna Langley teased that Tom Cruise could actually be the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside the International Space Station.
“Tom Cruise is taking us to space. He’s taking the world to space,” Donna Langley explained. “That’s the plan. We have a great project in development with Tom, that does contemplate him doing just that. Taking a rocket up to the space station and shooting and hopefully being the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the space station.” Langley added that Tom Cruise and Doug Liman pitched her on the movie over Zoom during the pandemic, teasing that most of it “actually takes place on Earth, and then [Tom Cruise] needs to go up to space to save the day.“
Tom Cruise has been pushing the limits of stunts and action with nearly every movie he makes, so actually going into space to do a spacewalk isn’t nearly as far-fetched as it once was. The only problem is where does Tom Cruise go from there? How do you top yourself once you’ve headed into space? How could you be content hanging off the side of a jet when you’ve gazed down on the entirety of civilization? Could we see Tom Cruise shooting a movie on the Moon? On Mars? Who knows, but nothing would surprise me at this point. Tom Cruise will next be seen in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, which is set to hit theaters on July 14, 2023. It will be followed by a sequel, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, on June 28, 2024.
