It's been a busy week for THE MUMMY, the upcoming reboot of the iconic horror franchise that serves as the first chapter in the cinematic universe Universal is planning to build around their classic monster characters. First, a new poster was released for the film, then we got a new trailer, and then a promo arrived online to provide a hint at how Universal's upcoming monster movies are going to be tied together: could the key to this cinematic universe be an organization called Prodigium, which exists to "recognize, examine, contain, and destroy evil"?
Just one week after the previous poster was unveiled, another poster for THE MUMMY has been released. While the first poster showed off the title character's sarcophagus and the second drew attention to her double-pupiled eye, this third one has the Mummy stepping into the background so the star of the film, Tom Cruise, can get some time in the spotlight. With the city of London being turned into a sandy ruin at the bottom of the image, this poster also suggests that the film will be delivering destruction on an epic scale.
Directed by Alex Kurtzman from a screenplay by Jon Spaihts, THE MUMMY has the following synopsis:
Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen whose destiny was unjustly taken from her, is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.
From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.
Cruise is joined in the cast by Jake Johnson, Annabelle Wallis, Courtney B. Vance, Marwan Kenzari, and Javier Botet, with Sofia Boutella as the Mummy and Russell Crowe as Dr. Henry Jekyll, who works for Prodigium.
THE MUMMY will be released on June 9, 2017.
Universal's plan is to follow it up with films based on the Invisible Man, the Wolf Man, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, Frankenstein's Monster (and his Bride), monster slayer Van Helsing, and more, all of these films taking place within the same world, allowing for the characters to cross paths.
