Top Gun: Maverick officially became the highest-grossing film of 2022 both domestically and globally after crossing $1 billion worldwide. The feat makes it the first film of the year to cross the milestone and Tom Cruise is thanking the fans and congratulating theater owners for its box office success worldwide.
Tom Cruise took to his Twitter page to thank the fans and theater owners for the enormous success of the Top Gun sequel. He did so not only on behalf of the Top Gun: Maverick cast and crew but also for everyone that continues to support theaters and the moviegoing experience. Just showing how much of a class act he is, Cruise also congratulated all the films currently in release that have truly done their part to help movie theaters recover in the wake of the pandemic. It’s a credit to Tom Cruise that he was instrumental in holding Top Gun: Maverick for a theatrical release following several COVID-related delays. When many suggested the film could go to the Paramount+ streaming service, Cruise made it clear that the movie was made for the big screen and that’s how it would first be seen. They’re certainly celebrating all over Paramount Pictures now because this could very well end up being the biggest film of the year and it’s very close to being the studios’ highest-grossing release ever. Transformers: Age of Extinction is their biggest global hit to date at $1.1 billion and Maverick currently sits at $1.006 billion with no signs of slowing down.
It’s also very telling that Paramount Pictures has not decided on a release date for Top Gun: Maverick’s debut on streaming. Many movies are sticking to the 45-day theatrical window but the sequel is still killing it at the box office so there really is no reason to cut into its sales if it’s still pulling in a significant amount of money. The movie is in its fifth week of release and is still second at the box office. In fact, it almost had a shot at number one this weekend over Elvis after outselling the movie on Saturday. It’s possible that the long Fourth of July weekend will also be very good for the sequel so its impressive box office run is far from over.
