Michael Caine became a nonagenarian this week, turning 90 on March 14th. To celebrate, Michael Caine had himself a little birthday bash, with other than Tom Cruise one of the few good men in attendance.
Comedian David Walliams posted photos from Michael Caine’s birthday on his Instagram, complete with pictures of the birthday boy and Cruise. One even shows what appears to be the lamest birthday cake in history, considering it was made for a knighted, two-time Oscar-winner…You can see the pictures below:
As Michael Caine and Tom Cruise are seated next to each other, we’d have to assume they’re close friends. This might be a bit of a surprise to some, considering the two have never worked on a movie together. OK, they both have a credit on 2002’s Austin Powers in Goldmember, but Caine is a supporter who doesn’t share a single frame with Cruise, who cameos as himself playing the shagadelic Powers in Austinpussy. And now we can’t get the image of Caine in a Mission: Impossible movie out of our heads!
Michael Caine posted earlier this week on Twitter (yes, Michael Caine has a Twitter) thanking his 770,000+ followers for their birthday wishes. Caine doesn’t post often, but when it does, it’s delightful and cheery, with a simple “Hello! Hello!” or a “Good Night My Sweet Ones” before he heads off to beddy-bye. Here’s hoping his 90s not only bring him joy, but that he gets more active on social media–who doesn’t want a chipper message from an acting icon?
Not long ago, reports came out that Michael Caine would be retiring from acting, a profession he has been in since the early 1950s. Soon after, Caine debunked the claim, saying, “Regarding retirement, I’ve spent over 50 years getting up at 6:00 a.m. to make movies, and I’m not getting rid of my alarm clock.” His latest movie, Medieval, came out last year.
What is your favorite Michael Caine performance and/or movie? For this writer, it’s Get Carter, Hannah and Her Sisters and the holiday classic The Muppet Christmas Carol, giving an all-time memorable turn as Ebenezer Scrooge.
