We all know the work of the legendary writer J.R.R. Tolkien, who on top of countless other stories created the world of Middle-earth in the LORD OF THE RINGS series, which is more popular today than ever before. With Nicholas Hoult playing the author, the new biopic TOLKIEN will take us into the world of the man himself and the events that shaped him, including the bond with his mates, the love of his life (Lily Collins), and fighting in World War I. The first full trailer is here to showcase all of that, with even a dragon or two thrown in for good measure. It is a story about J.R.R. Tolkien, after all.

While other biopics around men like Stephen Hawking (THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING) and Alan Turing (THE IMITATION GAME) had to do what they could with the basics of the genre (doing a very good job, for sure), TOLKIEN looks like it embraces some fantastical elements, all in the name of bringing to life the imagination of the man at the heart of the movie. The horrors of war conjure images of dragons and fire demons, which all look much more haunting than they would in a typical fantasy movie. This all makes the movie look far more interesting than your garden variety biopic, as does getting the chance to hear Hoult’s Tolkien say the word “fellowship” now and again.
Along with Hoult and Collins, the movie stars Colm Meaney, Anthony Boyle, Patrick Gibson, Tom Glynn-Carney, Craig Roberts, Laura Donnelly, Genevieve O’Reilly, Pam Ferris, and Derek Jacobi and is directed by Dome Karukoski and written by David Gleeson and Stephen Beresford.

Here’s the synopsis:
TOLKIEN explores the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts at school. This takes him into the outbreak of World War I, which threatens to tear the “fellowship” apart. All of these experiences would inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle-Earth novels.
TOLKEIN is in theaters May 10.
