The first Spawn action-figure was released twenty-five years ago, and now creator Todd McFarlane has teamed up with Kickstarter to deliver a remastered version of that original figure. "We're thrilled that Todd McFarlane Productions is bringing Spawn to Kickstarter. When McFarlane launched his first line of toys in 1995, he showed that creative independence is a key ingredient in doing something innovative and new within an established and sometimes stagnant industry," said Nick Yulman, Kickstarter's Head of Design & Technology. "We're creating this new section for Toys on Kickstarter to celebrate the launch of this project and to inspire more independent toy designers to follow their visions." The new version of the Spawn action-figure will be 7-inches tall and feature double the articulation which the original figure had. The figure will also include a remastered comic cover from Todd McFarlane.
"As an artist and a creator, I have worked to evolve my creations to the highest artistic level achievable. I’m going back to the beginning of the first Spawn Action Figure and Comic I ever created. It will be remastered and modernized with all the skill sets, details, and technology that I have learned over the past 26 years to bring you the best version of that iconic Spawn Action Figure and Comic from 1995," said Todd McFarlane. "It’s an honor that Kickstarter is creating a new toy section on its platform and debuting it in conjunction with the first-ever Spawn Kickstarter." As I write this, the Spawn Kickstarter is already well over its $100,000 goal. There will be four levels of the remastered Spawn figure; the classic costume, the modern costume, the artist proof edition, as well as a three-pack which will include all three figures along with two new head sculpts.
Speaking of SPAWN, Todd McFarlane is still trying to get the long-belated big-screen reboot off the ground. The film is slated to star Jamie Foxx (SOUL) as Spawn and Jeremy Renner (AVENGERS: ENDGAME) as Detective Twitch, but McFarlane has experienced delays owing to creative disagreements over the R-rated script. However, the success of JOKER has rejuvenated interest in his SPAWN film. "I keep trying to convince people that doing a dark, serious comic book movie will work," McFarlane said. "There’s been so much success with these PG-13 movies that there’s a resistance to them in Hollywood. But since Joker came out, it proves what I’ve been saying for over two years to any executives I can talk to. Serious dark comic books can work. R-movies can succeed. So now, all of a sudden, I’ve been getting a lot of phone calls saying, “Todd, we need to talk to you about that R-rated dark thing you wanted to do.” So Joker did me a favor."
