Moviegoers were given the fan-service moment of a lifetime as Spider-Man: No Way Home allowed three generations of the character to come together on the big screen for the first time. Due to its multiverse storyline, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield were able to bring their versions of Peter Parker/Spider-Man into the MCU with Tom Holland’s take on the character but, due to having to keep all of this a secret until the film’s release, the trio didn’t get to discuss the experience publicly. Now that the movie has been out for over a month, “Deadline” has brought the trio together again, albeit remotely, to discuss the experience of making Spider-Man: No Way Home.
During the chat with “Deadline“, Tobey and Andrew were asked about how they came on board and while we have heard Andrew’s take on this before, this was really the first time we got to hear Tobey Maguire talk about his journey. Maguire met with producers Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige and he was immediately struck by their genuine exuberance to the story and their desire to really make this union happen. Here is what he had to say:
“I gotta say, I was intrigued immediately. In that conversation, the intention, the kind of love and celebration of these movies, and what it meant i think to Amy and Kevin was apparent. To me, when artists or people who are um steering the creative process have a kind of authentic, genuine intent of celebration and love, it just was so apparent in both of them that I just wanted to join that.”
Maguire went on to say, “I’m a big fan of Tom and those movies and Andrew. So, it was definitely intriguing. But, yes, I was also going, ‘Well, what what are we going to do?’ And that was a bit mysterious. I did appreciate what was shared. But, it was really about getting together with these people and revisiting what was part of my history and getting a chance to like come together. There are personal things too, which are kind of resolutions or a way to revisit and… I’m not quite sure how to put it. It’s just to get back into that and i don’t want to say like close the chapter… But revisit and have certain resolutions and just join in this loving creative spirit.” Not a closing of a chapter huh? I expect social media to latch on to that statement in a big way.
What’s evident from the nearly 30-minute interview is that there is this brotherhood between these performers because they share this unique experience together. Both Tobey and Andrew expressed being there to service Tom’s story and his growth as the character was a big reason this paid off for them emotionally and while Tom admitted he was nervous as their first day on set together arrived, he was immediately put at ease because it became clear almost immediately that this was going to a celebration of something they all helped create. They all also give major credit to director Jon Watts for not getting deterred by the scope of the film and managing to almost make it feel like they were making an independent Spider-Man project.
The interview is certainly a good listen and it is cool to finally get them talking about the experience together since they didn’t get to during the promotional tour for obvious reasons. The interview also touches on how funny it was that Andrew probably had to lie the most about his involvement because he promoted not one, but two films before the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Holland gives an answer about his Spider-Man future.
What are YOUR thoughts on their first interview together?
