Titans superhero lands a Season 3 renewal on DC Universe

DC and Warner Bros. Television have announced that the live-action superhero drama TITANS will return for a third season on DC Universe. The first season of the mature-rated series launched in September 2018, with the second season currently airing on the subscription-based streamer every Friday. The cast includes Brenton Thwaites as Dick Grayson, Anna Diop as Starfire, Teagan Croft as Raven, Ryan Potter as Beast Boy, Conor Leslie as Wonder Girl, Alan Ritchson as Hawk, Minka Kelly as Dove, Curran Walters as Robin, and Iain Glenn as Bruce Wayne. Currently, the eclectic team of heroes are up against their most deadly assailant yet thanks to Esai Morales' Deathstroke, known to many as the most deadly assassin in all of the DC Universe.

The renewal of TITANS may come as a surprise to some, given the dismal performance of DC's exclusive streaming service, DC Universe. So far, DC's only winners on the platform have been TITANS, as well as the best-reviewed series DOOM PATROL, which has been renewed for a second season but under a deal that co-opts the brand for HBO Max usage. (via Deadline) At one time, DC Universe was proud to host the James Wan-produced SWAMP THING series, until the powers that be "drained the swamp" after just one episode. After showing little faith in SWAMP THING, and finding their subscription numbers less than desirable, rumors began circulating that Warner Bros. was pulling the plug on DC Universe, though the platform remains live to this day.

On deck for DC Universe is HARLEY QUINN, the upcoming animated series starring Kaley Cuoco as the Qweenpin of Crime. The series is scheduled to to arrive on November 29, just a few months before Daddy's Little Monster returns to theaters for director Cathy Yan's BIRDS OF PREY (AND THE FANTABULOUS EMANCIPATION OF ONE HARLEY QUINN).

As it happens, the animated arrival of Harley Quinn isn't the only project that DC has teased. It's also been announced that the studio is developing an anthology series titled BIZARROTV. According to DC, the show will be presented using both live-action and animated formats. The project aims to feature characters that hail from some of the more bizzare and lesser-known corners of DC's Multiverse, including Space Cabbie, Ambush Bug, Slam Bradley and the Creeper. Producing the new animated project is Warner Bros. Television Group’s digital production unit Blue Ribbon Content, with plans to unleash the series sometime next year.

Here's the official plot synopsis for HARLEY QUINN:

The adult animated comedy series follows Harley’s adventures, where alongside a ragtag crew of DC castoffs, she tries to earn a seat at the biggest table in villainy: the Legion of the Doom.

Joining Cuoco for HARLEY QUINN are Lake Bell (BOJACK HORSEMAN) as Pamela Isley/Poison Ivy, Sanna Lathan (BLADE) as Catwoman, Alan Tudyk (FIREFLY) as Joker, James Wolk (MAD MEN) as Superman, Rahul Kohli (I, ZOMBIE) as Scarecrow, Vanessa Marshall (ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY) as Princess Diana/Wonder Woman, as well as Jason Alexander (SEINFELD), Diedrich Bader (OFFICE SPACE), Ron Funches (GET HARD), Tony Hale (VEEP), Christopher Meloni (MAN OF STEEL), Natalie Morales (BATTLE OF THE SEXES), Jim Rash (COMMUNITY), J.B. SMOOVE (SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME), and Wanda Sykes (MONSTER IN LAW), among others.

If you ask me, it sounds as if DC Universe is alive and well. With TITANS getting a Season 3 renewal, plans for another surreal and subversive season of DOOM PATROL, and plenty of animated projects on the horizon, I wouldn't count the superhero-oriented streamer out just yet.
