Titanic getting a remastered theatrical re-release just in time for Valentine’s Day 2023

Titanic, remastered, re-release, valentine's day, 2023

Your heart will go on once again in 2023 as Titanic is setting itself up for a remastered theatrical re-release just in time for Valentine’s Day. The film, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this December, will be re-released with a remastered version available in cinemas in 3D 4K HDR and high-frame-rate.

The release will begin internationally on February 10, 2023, per Deadline. Disney is handling the foreign release while Paramount, who has the domestic rights, is expected to set its date for the release in the coming days. The James Cameron-directed Oscar-winning drama should play well over the lover’s holiday and will add even more money to its already robust $2.195 billion worldwide total, already making it the No.3 movie ever at the global box office. Cameron’s longtime producing partner and COO of Lightstorm Entertainment Jon Landau teased news of the Titanic re-release at Disney’s CineEurope presentation as he showed off a 3D look at the remastered version to the Barcelona crowd on Wednesday.

Titanic was a word-of-mouth sensation like something we hadn’t really seen at the time. Released on December 19, 1997, the film opened at $28.6 million during its opening weekend. There were initial concerns about the movie’s box office performance because it was the most expensive film ever made at the time, carrying a $200 million budget. Despite those concerns, it defied all logic and spent a staggering 15 consecutive weeks at number one. By the end of its initial run, the film grossed $600.7 million at the domestic box office, making it the biggest movie of all time on that front at that point. It was also the first movie to gross over a billion dollars worldwide at the box office, taking in $1.2 billion globally at the time. After reissues in 2012 and 2017, the film brought its domestic total to $659.4 million and its global haul to $2.195 billion.

The movie was also hit with critics, earning an 87% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and several other accolades. Titanic was nominated for 14 Academy Awards, tying All About Eve from 1950 for the most Oscar nominations. The film would go on to win 11 of them, including Best Picture and Best Director for James Cameron, tying Ben-Hur from 1959 for the most Oscar wins by a single film. In the movie, which incorporates historical and fictionalized aspects, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet play the members of different social classes who fall in love aboard the ship during its ill-fated maiden voyage. The film also stars Billy Zane, Kathy Bates, Frances Fisher, Gloria Stuart, Benard Hill, Jonathan Hyde, Victor Garber, and Bill Paxton.
