If you were to talk to certain people about actor Timothée Chalamet you might as well think the man is a god, but in his new movie, he will have to settle with just being a king. In the first trailer for the period drama, THE KING, Chalamet takes on the leading role of Prince Hal, the soon King Henry V, a young man who assumes the throne of England and must navigate the deceptive and violent environment he’s now in.

Adapted from the William Shakespeare plays “Henry IV: Parts 1 & 2,” and “Henry V,” the script was written by Joel Edgerton and David Michod (WAR MACHINE, THE ROVER), with the former also taking on the role of Falstaff. Most of the trailer hinges on Hal and Falstaff talking about the nature of ruling and choosing who you place around you carefully, as we then get a montage of all the other stuff that comes with period epics: grand costumes, stunning production values, and maybe a bit of sexy time. There’s even a little “Battle of the Bastards”-style scene in there, so also expect some muddy, bloody action in there too.
Overall the movie looks like a solid period drama, focusing more on the politics and drama rather than the combat that can often get the butts in the seats. Netflix released another period epic last year with OUTLAW KING starring Chris Pine as Robert the Bruce, and that was a mostly satisfying, perfectly fine entry in the genre, and THE KING looks like it may fall into that same category.
Along with Chalamet and Edgerton, the movie stars Robert Pattinson, Lily-Rose Depp, Sean Harris, Ben Mendelsohn, Thomasin McKenzie and more.
