Ryan Murphy fans, this is for you. Deadline has just reported on a new update on THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW remake. Wait, the what? Yes, a remake. If you’re wondering where the heck this piece of news came from, don’t be alarmed. The idea was mentioned back in 2008 and ever since then…it kind of dropped from the radar. All of a sudden it’s back and with the attention it’s getting from this bit of news I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s “full steam ahead!”
So what’s status on the remake? It looks like Ryan Murphy, the creator of GLEE (the TV show that features kids singing and dancing), has just finished wrapping an episode for the hit show. The show will be devoted to the cult classic THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW and will air on October 24th. But that’s not really the headline of the day. After seeing what Murphy could bring to the table, Fox is trying make a deal with the man to make a remake of the 1975 musical.
Murphy has yet to sign the dotted line. Then again, if I was Murphy, I’d be hesitant to sign anything at the moment. The guy has his own share of projects to work on for the next few years. Murphy is trying to direct THE NORMAL HEART, an adaptation of the Larry Kramer play regarding AIDS. The film stars Mark Ruffalo. On top of that, Murphy also recieved $5 million from Sony to write and direct another romantic comedy that stars Julia Roberts. Will he give up the dough or push the films back for the sake of a remake? Hardly, but we’ll just have to wait around until another update comes along.
The original Rocky Horror Picture Show, written by cast member Richard O’Brien and director Jim Sharman, launched Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick and had a cast that included O’Brien, Nell Campbell and Meat Loaf in a raucous re-telling of the Frankenstein story.
