So it looks like that Netflix Addams Family streaming project that Tim Burton has been involved with for some time will apparently be about an adult-aged Wednesday Addams called, simply, Wednesday.
Here's the synopsis:
The coming-of-age comedy, written by Smallville creators Al Gough and Miles Millar and to be directed by Burton, is a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams’ years as a student at Nevermore Academy. That’s where she attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships.
I have…a lot of thoughts. For one, I love the Addams Family! Hell, when the first movies were coming while I was still a little kid, Christina Ricci's Wednesday Addams was my first on-screen crush. However, I'm honestly not really sold on this new series. I mean, for one thing, there's Tim Burton, who hasn't made a great (or even good) movie recently, and same goes for Al Ghough and Miles Millar, who – in my opinion – shit the bed pretty hard with the last seasons of Smallville. And while it could theoretically be interesting to see how Wednesday deals with adulthood – especially given her unique upbringing – Netflix doing some pseudo-Harry Potter bullshit with a magic school and "grittifying" it up with murders and stuff seems like it's trying way too hard to jump on the bug-nuts Riverdale train (which Netflix also hilariously did with their ridiculous Winx reboot).
But, who knows? Maybe Burton still has some juice in him, and maybe Gough and Millar have found an interesting way to tell this story. Sure, I'm not convinced yet, but I'm more than willing to be proven wrong (hell, I'd prefer to be proven wrong). So we'll see.
Meanwhile, no official release date as of yet, but we'll keep you posted!
But what do you guys think? Fans of the Addams Family? If so, what do you think of this premise? Either way, sound off below!
