Over the past couple of weeks we've been hearing more and more about the proposed sequel to Tim Burton's BEETLEJUICE, with the director stating that a follow-up is 'closer than ever' and that Winona Ryder would be returning alongside Michael Keaton when or if this project goes in front of the cameras. Now Burton has spoken about BEETLEJUICE 2 yet again, this time with Yahoo! Movies, and has indicated that the film isn’t something he thinks of as being a direct sequel to its predecessor. Say what?
Here's what Burton had to say:
“There’s a script now, that I think is closer to what it could be and I’m excited about it. I wouldn’t call it so much a sequel, but it’ll have some characters [from the original 'Beetlejuice']. It’s a bit too early to say but it’s definitely something that’s on my radar and something I’d love to do.”
So we may be seeing the return of BEETLEJUICE, but it won't be 'so much a sequel'. I'm not sure what that could mean. A 're-imagining', perhaps? But why have returning characters such as Ryder's Lydia Deetz? Guess we'll have to wait and see how this one unfolds.
Seth Grahame-Smith is working on the screenplay with Burton set to helm.
