We finally have the first trailer for director Tim Burton’s upcoming drama BIG EYES. I’ve been anticipating this one for a long time; I was getting worried Burton only wanted to make movies with Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham, and a lot of CGI. Thankfully Burton remembered he doesn’t have to go full weird to make something entertaining, ED WOOD for example. The trailer for BIG EYES doesn’t really feel or sound like a Burton film, but you’ll notice little nuances in the trailer that remind you of the directors touch.
Here’s the official synopsis for BIG EYES:
BIG EYES is based on the true story of Walter Keane (Christoph Waltz), who was one of the most successful painters 1950s and early 1960s. The artist earned staggering notoriety by revolutionizing the commercialization and accessibility of popular art with his enigmatic paintings of waifs with big eyes. The truth would eventually be discovered though: Keane’s were actually not created by him at all, but by his wife, Margaret (Amy Adams). The Keanes, it seemed, had been living a lie that had grown to gigantic proportions. BIG EYES centers on Margaret’s awakening as an artist, the phenomenal success of her paintings, and her tumultuous relationship with her husband, who was catapulted to international fame while taking credit for her work.
It’s an intriguing one that’s for sure; with powerhouse actors like Adams and Waltz I can imagine we are in for some award season chatter. This looks like a fantastic return to form for Burton who is without a doubt one of my favorites. This is now near the top of my anticipated movies this holiday season. The film also stars Krysten Ritter, Terrence Stamp, Jason Schwartzman, and Danny Huston.
BIG EYES opens in theaters on December 25, 2014.
