Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness has been all the rage since it made its premiere with the true crime miniseries nearly topping COVID-19 in terms of overall exposure. Joe Exotic and friends may all seem a bit strange but that hasn't stopped us from tuning in and believe me, a lot of us have tuned in according to new ratings reports.
Tiger King has been watched by 19 million people in the first 10 days of its launch with over 34 million people streaming the docuseries for at least a few minutes. That puts it right alongside Seasons 2 and 3 of Stranger Things which drew 31.2 million and 36.3 million viewers respectively in the same time frame. All of those numbers add up to mean that Tiger King is one of Netflix’s most successful series to date.
Despite its popularity, Tiger King has received its share of criticism for its exploitative, tabloid-journalism treatment of very serious subject matter, including several crimes against both human beings and endangered animals. The docuseries follows Joe Exotic, a zookeeper and big cat breeder currently serving jail time after being convicted in a murder-for-hire plot against his professional and personal rival Carole Baskin, who runs a non-profit animal sanctuary and is trying to make private ownership of big cats illegal in the U.S. The overall premise is the least crazy thing that happens across the seven episodes which is why Tiger King has seemingly captivated an audience by virtually coming out of nowhere. Viewers love any good true crime obsession and Tiger King is currently filling that void.
I finally checked this thing out and I think it was a victim of hype because I didn't dig it as much as everyone else but the bizarre cast of characters is the hook that draws you in and on that level, Tiger King is worthy of some of the attention but I can't wait for something else to steal all of its attention.
