When GIRLS TRIP was released in the summer of 2017, the film became a huge surprise hit, grossing $115.1 million a $19 million budget. Starring Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, Regina Hall & Tiffany Haddish, the film's success sparked almost immediate discussion of a sequel and while all involved have said they're eager to do another film, not much news has come of the sequel, until now. Tiffany Haddish, who became the film's true breakout star, has revealed that the entire cast is currently working on script ideas for the sequel.
While speaking with "HuffPost" on a variety of topics, the sequel to GIRLS TRIP was brought up and Haddish said that herself and her fellow co-stars gathered together via the video chat service Zoom (due to the COVID-19 quarantine) to catch up with one another and said that later this week they would be hopping on a call again to start writing the script for GIRLS TRIP 2.
Haddish also revealed that talks regarding the sequel treatment from the original GIRLS TRIP co-writer, Tracy Oliver, fell through due to money. Now, Haddish said, the women are ready to continue on their own, even if what they might come up with could be something entirely different and not even a sequel to the film:
"We might decide not to even make it ‘Girls Trip.' Maybe we’ll do a different story just in case no one wants to make ‘Girls Trip 2."
The first film focused on a group of friends who reunite in New Orleans for the Essence Music Festival. Over the course of the weekend, the women catch up, uncover new secrets, and get into a whole lot of trouble. Directed by Malcom D. Lee, the film wasn't just a hit with moviegoers but also with critics, scoring a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. The comedy is notable for being a hit during a time in recent years that the genre has struggled to ignite at the box office.
I personally enjoyed GIRLS TRIP and wouldn't mind getting this group back together. Even if what we get isn't a sequel, I think a project with these four leads is bound to be a winner. Do YOU want to see a sequel to GIRLS TRIP?
