If you've been to a movie theater in the past several decades, you're likely to have seen THX's iconic logo appear before your film of choice. If the letters aren't enough to jog your memory, then perhaps the gradual "Bwaaaaaaaaaa!" that accompanies the brand will ring like a familiar sound in your finely-tuned ears. That sound, dubbed the "Deep Note" in 1982, serves as a collection of sounds that when played in succession, build to a chest-rattling crescendo – signaling that the show has begun.
Recently, THX partnered with the creative studio American Meme to create a new trailer for its Deep Note, titled "Genesis." While the audio is of the same stellar quality, the visual journey that unfolds alongside the legendary sound is now an eye-popping roller coaster of sights that will make you glad that you paid for premium seating and top-notch screen quality.
You can watch THX's new "Genesis" intro below:
The new intro begins with us, the viewer, hurtling through a starry stratosphere and over a gorgeous mountain vista. After emerging from a droplet of rain, we're transported to a lush forest where a busy dragonfly is set to take flight. As the creature's wings shake the excess rain from his weighted form, a microcosm of life begins to glow, pulsating with color and light. After taking a quick dip, we arrive in a city that's teeming with life. As the blades of a nearby chopper swirl and hum, the camera pulls back to reveal glittering skyscrapers crowded around a traffic-choked bridge. As it happens, this entire scene taken place inside a snow globe, which sits atop a table that is stationed within the observation deck of a massive spacecraft. Once the ship is ejected from its port, we travel down a claustrophobic corridor that eventually leads to the THX logo in all of its newfound glory. Naturally, this is when the "Bwaaaaaaaa!" sound comes into play, letting you know that it's blast off time.
Now, would you believe me if I told you that the plot for this new intro was written by Thunder Levin, the dude who wrote SHARKNADO? Of course you wouldn't, because that's crazy talk. However, this is exactly the case. I know, I was blown away as well. To be honest, I still haven't gotten over it.
It's the dawn of a new era for THX's Deep Note, my friends, and I'll be damned if this intro isn't one of the most inspiring that I've ever seen. THX, a company that certifies audio experiences for us moviegoers, is clearly letting us know that they stand firmly by their time-honored work in show business. I love this new intro, and look forward to it becoming the new standard as time ticks by.
