The Golden Globes were announced on Monday as awards season kicks into high gear, and now to keep the train chugging the Screen Actors Guild have announced their nominees for the best performances in both film and television. Voted on by any actor in the business with a SAG card, the nominations and wins in the movie section can add a serious bump for a movie at the Oscars, as the acting branch of the Academy is the largest of all the branches. Some surprises in the film category include Daniel Kaluuya for GET OUT, while PHANTOM THREAD’s Daniel Day-Lewis didn’t make the cut. As well, a major upset seems to be the shutting out of THE POST, which was expected to be a major player in the Best Actor (Tom Hanks), Actress (Meryl Streep) and Ensemble categories.
As for TV, there are some of the usual players, like GAME OF THRONES, VEEP, ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK, THIS IS US and more, while some new shows like GLOW made a serious impression by snagging noms for Alison Brie, Marc Maron and in the ensemble category. You will also notice “Male Actor in a Comedy Series” has six nominees instead of the usual five.

When it comes to the Oscars the SAG awards can be a big signifier as to which actor has a shot winning the Oscar in each respective category, and when it comes to the ensemble award, which film can take Best Picture. The odds of a movie winning Best Picture without a SAG nomination in the ensemble category is almost unheard of since the SAG awards started, which means movies like DUNKIRK, THE POST, THE SHAPE OF WATER and CALL ME BY YOUR NAME now have a much harder mountain to climb. But this year is a bit all over the place compared to previous years. In many circles/ THE POST was considered the frontrunner given how it's been snagging nominations in the script, directing, acting and best film categories in other awards circles. This is where it had the opportunity to shine, but clearly, SAG is not as hot on it as previously thought, which means it may not be such a surefire bet to take home the big Oscar. And yet, POST, and other films like SHAPE and CMBYN, have been strong everywhere else, so the race could still go in any direction. Right now things are looking great for movies like THREE BILLBOARDS, GET OUT and LADY BIRD, which also made impressions at the Globes, so all three could be forces to be reckoned with.
The SAG awards will air on TBS on January 21, 2018 having its first host ever with Kristen Bell.
