Taika Waititi’s newest film, Next Goal Wins, is a step back into the smaller film market for the New Zealander. While the director of What We Do in the Shadows struck a big cord that got him the opportunity to jump on the Marvel Studios train, throughout the explosion in his career, he maintained that he would still keep one foot in the indie world. Waititi’s last effort with Marvel, Thor: Love and Thunder, was a divisive entry and he would recently reveal that his time with the Asgardian would take a hiatus.

The eccentric comedy director recently said he would not have involvement with Thor 5, but this does not mean he would cut ties with the House of Mouse altogether. He is slated to helm a Star Wars movie that he jokes will piss people off. And, though Waititi is stepping down from the Thor franchise, CBR has reported that he still knows of some details of the upcoming sequel. In an interview with Inverse, Waititi revealed that Marvel is currently talking to Hemsworth about returning soon to a new adventure for the God of Thunder. With the recent news of Marvel’s current turbulent journey, there have been reports that the studio considered bringing back fan favorites to save some face, so a plea to Hemsworth’s next entry might be Marvel’s obvious move.

The Love and Thunder director said his decision to step down from the franchise is simply being burnt out and that he “needed a break from that.” He expounded, “It’s a very draining process working on these films for two and a half years and nonstop.”

Although the Hunt for the Wilderpeople director is not involved, Waititi still divulged what he hopes to see explored in a new movie in the Thor franchise. “What is left to do to him? It’s got to be something that feels like it’s carrying on with the evolution of the character, but still in a very fun way and still giving him things to come up against that feel like they’re building on the obstacles that he has to overcome.” He also expressed interest in seeing “more and more outlandish and crazy beasts, monsters and aliens. There’s a fun element to [Thor] and he has a casualness and a sort or swagger about him when he visits these worlds and encounters these aliens that I don’t think you’d get when it’s an earthling traveling through space exploring the universe.”
