Now, before we start tearing this a new one, let's look at what we're dealing with here; John Cusack, who has had a mostly respectable career, until going the Steven Seagal route, and Thomas Jane, an actor we all dig as the kind of rough-around-the edges guy who should be in better movies, have teamed up to make a cheesy action comedy called DRIVE HARD. With all that laid out, you can't have high expectations and, fortunately (or unfortunately), the trailer for the film doesn't look like it wants to be anything more than what you expect; straight cheesy B-grade schlock. Is that a bad thing? Shiiiiit, you take a look and decide for yourself.
"What kind of stupid do you think I am?":
Here's the synposis:
American thief, Simon Keller (Cusack), arrives in a foreign country in need of a getaway driver. Rather than recruit one from the underworld, he takes a driving lesson from ex F-1 champion, Peter Roberts (Jane), now working as a driving instructor. After Keller robs a bank during the lesson, Roberts has no choice, but to use his driving talent to get away from pursuing police and mobsters.
If it were any other actors in this film, I wouldn't give it a second thought, but despite their lack of success of late, I still love Cusack and Jane. I have no reason to believe that DRIVE HARD will be anything more than a hot mess, but I do have reason to believe that it could be a FUN hot mess. Or, it could be a complete embarrassment. I don't know. It does serve as a reminder, more than anything, that I want to see both of these guys doing better work, but I can't begrudge someone trying to pay the bills.
DRIVE HARD races into theaters (okay, probably VOD) sometime in 2014.
