G.I. JOE: RETALIATION will have a lot to make up for after pushing almost a year from it’s initial 2012 release date. For those of us who were looking forward to the movie, we now will approach it with hesitation, wondering if something was wrong with the movie itself that caused the studio to elect to “convert it to 3D” at the zero hour.
They are making strides in the right direction with their Cobra Special Forces viral campaign. When I was a kid, I hated Cobra as much as I possibly could. If I could have grown up to be a real G.I. Joe, I would have just to kick Destro’s ass. But, for the live action films, Cobra has to be less cartoony than they were in the original movie. They have to feel like a realistic villain that should be feared.
This new recruitment video plays exactly like the Army and Navy commercials aired on television all the time, right down to the voice of Keith David beckoning you to join their ranks. When the final image of the Cobra emblem shows up, I felt like they may have gotten them right for this movie. Add to that a pair of kick ass propaganda posters and you have the makings of a movie worth my attention.
Plot: A follow-up to the 2009 release of G.I. JOE: RISE OF THE COBRA, which grossed over $300M worldwide, Paramount Pictures, MGM and Skydance Productions, in association with HASBRO and di Bonaventura Pictures, commences production on G.I. JOE: RETALIATION. In this sequel, the G.I. Joes are not only fighting their mortal enemy Cobra; they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardize their very existence.
Whatever happens, I am beginning to get a little more faith in G.I. JOE: RETALIATION. I just hope it lives up.
G.I. JOE: RETALIATION opens everywhere on March 29, 2013.
