We haven’t stopped talking about Guillermo del Toro over the last couple of weeks, so why stop now? On top of all the fantastic news that we’ve been getting out of del Toro lately—with his projects like PACIFIC RIM 2, CRIMSON PEAK, AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS and “The Strain”—it was only a matter of time before we got a not-so-great update from the man himself. This time it’s the status of HELLBOY 3, a movie fans have been hoping for for quite some time now, and it doesn't look good. Like, at all.
During a recent Reddit AMA session, the director spilled some details on the status of the film, saying, “Well, you know, we don’t have that movie on the horizon, but the idea for it was to have Hellboy finally come to terms with the fact that his destiny, his inevitable destiny, is to become the beast of the Apocalypse, and having him and Liz face the sort of, that part of his nature, and he has to do it, in order to be able to ironically vanquish the foe that he has to face in the 3rd film. He has to become the best of the Apocalypse to be able to defend humanity, but at the same time he becomes a much darker being. It’s a very interesting ending to the series, but I don’t think it will happen.”
So there you have it, a little taste of what might have been if HELLBOY 3 ever happened. Unfortunately, the $150 million dollar budget that the film would require seems to be the major thing holding it back. It kind of blows that we may never see del Toro’s vision of his HELLBOY trilogy come to an end because it sounds pretty f*cking epic.
