GHOSTBUSTERS is out, people have seen it, and it’s time to look to the future. With the weekend numbers out for the movie said future looks pretty bright now, and though the film was not able to defeat a bunch of animated critters, it was able to rack-up a sweet $46 million. So of course the people over at Sony are pretty happy, and when you’re happy you make a lot of bold decisions, and they’ve made a pretty bold one indeed.
In an interview with The Wrap, president of worldwide distribution at Sony, Rory Bruer, spoke about the bright future of the paranormal-fighting team:
“The GHOSTBUSTERS world is alive and well. I expect GHOSTBUSTERS to become an important brand and franchise.”
As for a sequel:
“While nothing has been officially announced yet, there’s no doubt in my mind it will happen.”
Though there are no reports director Paul Feig or the four stars of the movie—Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones—will return, I would like to think that if the movie is a success it’s because they’re the reason why.
I am one of the folks in the “loved it” camp when it comes to the new GHOSTBUSTERS, and even though I would love a sequel this confidence from Bruer seems a little presumptuous. The first three days of a movie are not exactly a great indicator of the prolonged success of a movie—especially one as divisive as this. Just last month, INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE opened to about $41 million, but because of poor word of mouth it’s gone on to tank in the US, not even breaking $100 million yet. Similarly, GHOSTBUSTERS maintains an unfortunate 57 percent on Rotten Tomatoes’ audience indicator, which is not a good sign. The movie could have a good opening, and then tumble next and future weekends. Not to mention, we have yet to see how the movie plays overseas. To quote Han Solo: Don’t get cocky, kid. There’s still a long way to go.
