Thelma & Louise musical coming from Seyfried & Wood?

Amanda Seyfried is working on a major musical with Evan Rachel Wood, and now speculation has turned to it being an adaptation of the 1991 movie Thelma & Louise.

Amanda Seyfried was one of a handful of winners at the 80th Golden Globe Awards who was unable to attend. Seyfried–who won Best Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Television Film for the Hulu series The Dropout, in which she played controversial Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes–however, had a good reason for being absent from the ceremony. According to the presenters, Seyfried was “deep in the process of creating a new musical.” But it’s not a revival of the Mean Girls musical or even more Mamma Mia!, as Seyfried is reportedly workshopping a musical version of Thelma & Louise.

While not confirming the specifics on what exactly the Thelma & Louise musical might entail, Amanda Seyfried did post a video on Instagram confirming she was in fact working on a musical. In the video, Seyfried said, in part, “It is a true honor to have been a part of that. I had to miss it because I am doing something that is magic and it’s musical. So I’m finally getting to do something that I’ve never really done. That’s all I can really say about it. Hopefully more soon. But it’s a lot of work. It’s more fun, and it’s been a great night.”

The news comes from insiders offering info to Variety, who further noted that “a Thelma & Louise musical has been in the works since at least 2021 with the film’s screenwriter, Callie Khouri, attached and writing the book with Haley Feiffer, as well as indie singer/songwriter Neko Case creating the score.” Khouri won the film’s only Academy Award out of six nominations, which included Best Director and a rare two Best Actress nominations for the same movie, here for Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon (both would lose to Jodie Foster for The Silence of the Lambs).

While it’s unclear which exact role Amanda Seyfried and Evan Rachel Wood would take–assuming they will both headline the production–both performers have small but impressive work in film musicals. Seyfried was part of the aforementioned Mamma Mia! movies, while Wood showed off her singing chops in 2007’s Beatle-maniacal Across the Universe. She also recently played Madonna in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.

What do you think about this news? Is Thelma & Louise ripe for a musical adaptation? Or is it better left on the silver screen? Would Amanda Seyfried and Evan Rachel Wood make a good on-stage pair? Let us know in the comments section below!
