Florence Pugh has been especially prolific these past few years. Hot off the controversial release of Don’t Worry, Darling, the actress already has another project set for release next month. Netflix has released the first trailer for The Wonder, a period drama directed by Sebastián Lelio that finds Florence Pugh starring as a nurse investigating a young girl who claims not to have eaten anything for four months.
The Wonder is based on the novel by Emma Donoghue, who also penned the script alongside Alice Birch and Sebastián Lelio. Set in 1862 just after the Great Famine, The Wonder follows Nurse Lib Wright (Pugh) as she’s called to a devout community in the Irish Midlands to examine 11-year-old Anna, who claims to have survived on nothing but “manna from heaven” for the past four months. The trailer for The Wonder looks beautiful, with a slow-burn, religious mystery that captured my attention immediately. In addition to Florence Pugh, The Wonder also stars Tom Burke, Niamh Algar, Josie Walker, Elaine Cassidy, Kíla Lord Cassidy, Toby Jones, Dermot Crowley, Brían F. O’Byrne, and Ciarán Hinds.
The official synopsis for The Wonder:
Set in 1862, 13 years after the Great Famine, an English Nightingale Nurse Lib Wright (Pugh) is called to the Irish Midlands by a devout community to conduct a 15-day examination over one of their own. Anna O’Donnell (Cassidy) is an 11-year-old girl who claims not to have eaten for four months, surviving miraculously on ‘manna from heaven.’ As Anna’s health rapidly deteriorates, Lib is determined to unearth the truth, challenging the faith of a community that would prefer to stay believing.
Florence Pugh has several more projects just over the horizon, including Puss in Boots: The Last Wish on December 21st; Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer on July 21, 2023; and Dune: Part Two on November 17, 2023. Pugh is also expected to reprise her role of Yelena Belova for Marvel’s Thunderbolts movie. The Wonder debuted at the Telluride Film Festival last month and will be released in select theaters on November 2nd before streaming on Netflix on November 16th.
