The Witch director confirms his next project will be a Nosferatu remake

THE WITCH director Robert Eggers was a guest on IndieWire's Filmmaker Toolkit podcast this week, and he confirmed the rumors that have been swirling around for what feel like centuries. He will be directing a remake of the 1922 German classic NOSFERATU. Said Eggers:

[It’s shocking] to me. It feels ugly and blasphemous and egomaniacal and disgusting for a filmmaker in my place to do Nosferatu next. I was really planning on waiting a while, but that’s how fate shook out.

A lot of fans who were stunned by the subtlety and brutality of THE WITCH would disagree with his fitness to helm the project, but it's good to know he has so much respect for the material. In fact, he went on to say that watching NOSFERATU was a very pivotal moment in his development as a filmmaker:

That’s when I realized this is what I want to be doing. Nosferatu has a very close, magical connection for me. Though if I were to make the movie 17-year-old Rob was going to make of Nosferatu it would have been something between like The Nightmare Before Christmas and Sin City, whereas this is going to be the same approach as The Witch, where 1830s Biedermeier Baltic Germany needs to be articulated in a way that seems real.

That certainly seems within his wheelhouse, and I can't wait to see how the director can translate his inimitable style to a sophomore feature with such a strong title. More news on NOSFERATU as it breaks!
