Updated: The Wachowskis not working on a new sequel to The Matrix

UPDATE: A representative for Chad Stahelski told /Film that the director wasn't actually revealing information, but merely responding to a question of "What if the Wachowskis made another MATRIX?"

Original article:

Back in the day, Chad Stahelski worked as a stunt double and stunt coordinator on the trilogy of live action MATRIX films written and directed by the Wachowski siblings. Now Stahelski is better known as the director of his own trilogy, the JOHN WICK films, and while doing press for JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3 – PARABELLUM, which reaches theatres next week, it appears that he has dropped some major news about the future of the MATRIX franchise.

Although it was announced a couple years ago that Warner Bros. was looking to revive the franchise with new films that would tell "more stories set in the universe of THE MATRIX", with Zak Penn being hired to write a treatment for a new movie and rumors swirling that the studio was thinking of making a prequel that could star Michael B. Jordan as a younger version of Laurence Fishburne's Morpheus character, there hasn't been any further news on that for a while.

Now, during an interview with Yahoo Movies UK, Stahelski let it slip that he is

super happy that the Wachowskis are not just doing a Matrix, but they’re expanding what we all loved. And if it’s anywhere near the level of what they’ve already done, it wouldn’t take more than a call to go, ‘Hey, we want you to be a stunt guy’ and I would probably go and get hit by a car.”

This information leak surprised Yahoo Movies UK, since there hasn't been any news about the Wachowskis working on a new MATRIX film and it would have been major news if that announcement had been made.

Stahelski was asked a couple questions about this project he has heard about, but he only reiterated that the Wachowskis are involved with a new MATRIX film. He isn't sure if both Lilly and Lana Wachowski would be directing the movie – specifically, he said he's "not sure if Lana is". If this MATRIX is directed by one Wachowski without the other, it would be the first time in their careers that they haven't shared the directorial duties on a feature.

MATRIX trilogy star Keanu Reeves (who also happens to play John Wick) previously said that he would only agree to be involved with a new sequel if the Wachowskis wrote and directed it. Since Reeves is doing the JOHN WICK 3 press rounds with Stahelski, Yahoo Movies UK was able to able to ask him if he'd be part of the new movie now that the Wachowskis are supposedly working on it. Reeves said,

That would be a gift. I wouldn’t say no to that. Yeah."

Now we need to keep an eye out for official confirmations or denials from Warner Bros. and the Wachowskis.
