While many of us here at JoBlo champion films belonging to a myriad of genres, I think I might be the only one without kids who still watches family films on the regular. I'm talking about movies like HEAVYWEIGHTS, BUSHWACKED, CAMP NOWHERE, ROOKIE OF THE YEAR, and things of the like. For me, films belonging to the "Family" genre carry a certain level of innocents to them that I find endearing. I also appreciate that some of the jokes featured in the aforementioned list of flicks are filthy as hell. Like that part in BUSHWHACKED when Daniel Stern instructs a group of scouts to piss off a cliff side, their streams of urine showering Jon Polito's Agent Palmer down below. That scene still makes me chuckle to this very day, as I reflect on the idea that a gag such as this would never make the cut for a contemporary family adventure at the cinema.
Today Netflix has debuted a trailer for RIM OF THE WORLD, an upcoming Sci-Fi-Adventure film that tells the story of four misfit teenagers who join forces to save the world when an alien invasion interrupts their summer camp.
Directed by CHARLIE'S ANGELS and THE BABYSITTER helmer McG, and based on a script written by Zack Stentz (THOR, X-MEN: FIRST CLASS), Netflix's upcoming alien invasion film starring Jack Gore, Miya Cech, Benjamin Flores Jr., Alessio Scalzotto and Andrew Bachelor, among others, looks like Joe Cornish's ATTACK THE BLOCK signed up for one bummer of a summer camp program.
In watching the trailer, this movie looks to have it all: smart alec youngsters, high-speed car chases, vicious alien creatures, impressive special-effects, biting humor, and stakes that are even higher than any of the camp couselors from my youth. Sign me up for this program!
Here's the official description for RIM OF THE WORLD:
Summer camp at Rim of the World has barely begun when four misfit teenagers — Alex, ZhenZhen, Dariush, and Gabriel — find they’ve got bigger problems to face than learning how to canoe and climb ropes when aliens suddenly invade the planet. Alone in a campground once teeming with people, the kids are unexpectedly entrusted with a key that carries the secret to stopping the invasion. Without any adults or electronics to help guide the way, it’s clear what they must do: band together, conquer their fears, and save the world.
Executive produced by Steven Bello, Corey Marsh, Zack Stentz and Brad Mendelsohn, RIM OF THE WORLD will invade Netflix beginning on May 24.
