Walter Salles‘ ON THE ROAD broke a very long drought for Jack Kerouac to get to the big screen. Despite starring Kristen Stewart, ON THE ROAD has been getting positive reviews and proved that Kerouac was filmable. His second most famous work, BIG SUR, is going to capitalize on that success and continue the fictionalized adventures of the author once he has reached critical success and must deal with the fallout that comes with it.
BIG SUR was written and directed by Michael Polish. Polish and his brother are responsible from some great films together like TWIN FALLS IDAHO and NORTHFORK. Their films have always carried a sense of surrealism, but BIG SUR looks more like a Terrence Malick film in this trailer.
BIG SUR takes the character types from ON THE ROAD and advances their age 15 years, telling the tale of a man besieged by sudden notoriety and unable to cope with its trappings, such as TV appearances, recognition and wealth.
Jean-Marc Barr plays Jack Duluoz, the equivalent of ON THE ROAD’s Sal Paradise, played by Sam Riley. Josh Lucas plays Cody Pomeray, the equivalent of Garrett Hedlund‘s Neal Cassady. Kate Bosworth plays the center of their love triangle, Billie.
BIG SUR will premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. No official release date is set.
