The first trailer for Ivan Reitman's DRAFT DAY has arrived and it looks to be a solid entry in the sports drama genre. Starring Kevin Costner as a general manager of a football team who has to navigate the high stakes world of having the first draft pick in the NFL and what it will mean for his personal and professional life. The film is packed with a nice line up of stars, including Jennifer Garner, Denis Leary, Sam Elliot, Tom Welling, Terry Crews, Frank Langella, Rosanna Arquette, and Ellen Burstyn, who help make for an appealing look into the behind the scenes world of football.
Take a look:
Here's the synopsis:
On the day of the NFL Draft, general manager Sonny Weaver (Kevin Costner) has the opportunity to save football in Cleveland when he trades for the number one pick. He must quickly decide what he's willing to sacrifice in pursuit of perfection as the lines between his personal and professional life become blurred on a life-changing day for a few hundred young men with dreams of playing in the NFL. Also featuring Jennifer Garner and NFL & ESPN on-air talent Jon Gruden, Mike Mayock, Deion Sanders, Rich Eisen, Mel Kiper and Chris Berman.
This feels a lot like a football version of MONEYBALL in a sense, as it focuses on forming a winning team, even if by very different means and takes a harder look at the inner workings of everyone but the actual atheletes. As much as I can dig a standard sports film that focuses on the athletes, I tend to find the behind the scenes stuff just a tad more compelling and DRAFT DAY has potential to be a stand out in that crowd. Plus, having Costner in the lead is pitch perfect casting for a role like this and I think he'll carry this film with ease.
DRAFT DAY makes it's first pick on April 11, 2014.
