The Tomorrow War 2: Chris Pratt, Chris McKay & more in talks for sequel

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Originally intended to be a theatrical release from Paramount Pictures, The Tomorrow War was sold off (for $200 million) to the Amazon Prime streaming service once the pandemic hit. Released through Amazon last weekend, the film was watched by a lot of subscribers – according to Samba TV, 2.41 million households decided to check out The Tomorrow War during its first four days on Amazon. The film was so successful, director Chris McKay and star Chris Pratt have already been contacted about returning for The Tomorrow War 2.

They're not the only ones. According to Deadline, Amazon Studios and Skydance Media are also talking to screenwriter Zach Dean and Pratt's co-stars Yvonne Strahovski, Betty Gilpin, Sam Richardson, Edwin Hodge, and J.K. Simmons about coming back for the sequel. Since The Tomorrow War started out at Paramount, that studio is also involved in the conversation.

Developed and produced by Skydance, The Tomorrow War told the following story:

The world is stunned when a group of time travelers arrive from the year 2051 to deliver an urgent message: Thirty years in the future, mankind is losing a global war against a deadly alien species. The only hope for survival is for soldiers and civilians from the present to be transported to the future and join the fight. Among those recruited is high school teacher Dan Forester (Pratt), who teams up with a brilliant scientist (Strahovski) and his estranged father (Simmons) to rewrite the fate of the planet.

Deadline has more information on the film's success:

The global sci-fi actioner launched on July 2nd around the world exclusively on Prime Video in over 240 countries and territories and debuted at No. 1 across streaming platforms over the holiday weekend, per Screen Engine’s PostVOD. The film ranks as the biggest live-action streaming movie of the summer, starting with Screen Engine’s PostVOD summer reporting in May. There’s been a great response from Amazon Prime users with 20,55K reviews giving the Pratt pic a 4.5 out of 5 stars — one of the highest quantity and positive score on the service for their recent releases over opening week. In addition to the #1 ranking across streaming platforms in the US, Prime Video saw worldwide record-setting viewership in Brazil, India, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Australia, Mexico, Argentina and Japan. In 3M Smart TV terrestrial households, streaming analytics corp Samba TV reported that 2.4M U.S. Households tuned into Tomorrow War, another big weekend for Amazon in the wake of Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse (2.3M U.S. households 3-day per Samba) and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm (1.6M). Specific to opening weekend, Tomorrow War was No. 1 across the entire entertainment industry (film & tv/streaming & theatrical) for social conversation/interest (TV-I) per analytics firm ListenFirst.

So it makes sense that they're moving forward on The Tomorrow War 2 so quickly.
