The wait is over and we can now get a feel for what $250 million looks like onscreen, as the teaser trailer for THE LONE RANGER has arrived. The Jerry Bruckheimer produced film is a slight reinvention of the classic character, who first appeared in a 1933 radio show. Since that time, the character has undergone numerous adaptations, including TV, film, and animation. Now, director Gore Verbinski (PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN) along stars Armie Hammer as the Lone Ranger and Johnny Depp as Tonto, are bringing the long-standing character back into the limelight. The only question is; will people want to see a western fable on the big screen again?
I’m a big fan of Verbinski’s aesthetic. Say what you will about the PIRATES franchise, but it had style, wit, and charm, which kind of encompasses Verbinksi’s forte. This first teaser definitely has those attributes, from the detailed slow-motion shots, massive sets, and colorful characters; he’s right at home. There is very little dialogue or straight-up narrative to the trailer, which is as it should be since it’s only a teaser. But, that’s a teaser done right, in my opinion.
Check it out, kemosabe:
I had always planned on checking this out just for the talent involved, but this amps up my anticipation that much more. I love Verbinski’s style, plain and simple, and this looks to be slightly more serious in tone than his last three ventures to the CARIBBEAN. Summer 2013 is going to be chock full of superheroes and sci-fi, so I think there will be plenty of room at the crowded table for a western fable.
THE LONE RANGER, starring Armie Hammer, Johnny Depp, Tom Wilkinson, William Fichtner, Helena Bonham Carter, James Badge Dale, Barry Pepper and Ruth Wilson, thunders into theaters on July 3, 2013.
