**SPOILERS FOR THE SEASON 12 FINALE OF IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY**
IT’S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA is a perfect example of an American success story. The show almost wasn’t renewed after the first season, but the show about a narcissistic, depraved and crass group of friends has just wrapped up its 12th season, giving us Kitten Mittens, The Nightman vs. The Dayman and the D.E.N.N.I.S. system over many years of hilarity. Thanks to a loyal fan base the show could go on for ages. However, for one of the show’s stars it may be time to hang up the leather duster.
Star, co-developer and co-executive producer Glenn Howerton (who plays the manipulative Golden God, Dennis) recently spoke with Uproxx about the ending of last night’s season finale, which involved Dennis leaving down and saying, “I can’t do this shit anymore,” after discovering a love child of his. Fans may take this as Howerton leaving the show, and they may be right:
So… it’s a little complicated. I may seem a little bit evasive here, and I don’t mean to. It’s not entirely certain whether I am or am not. I might be. I might be, but I might not be. That really is the truth. Just to be clear, to dispel any potential weirdness, it has nothing to do with my relationship to anyone on the show or Rob or Charlie or anyone like that. It’s partially a creative and personal decision. We may be taking an extended hiatus between season 12 and season 13. So I’m certainly staying open to the possibility of doing more, but there is a possibility that I will not.
This news comes on the heels of Variety reporting that Howerton was signing on to do a NBC sitcom with Patton Oswalt about a former college professor who loses his job and is forced to take a job as a high school biology teacher, promptly imposing his cynical worldview on his students. Given Howerton’s writing and producing duties on SUNNY, in addition to acting, this could delay a new season on SUNNY — at least one that sees Dennis returning. Show creator and star Rob McElhenney (Mac) posted this series of tweets last night around the finale's premiere, hinting that no matter what the show will go on:
All things must pass.

Except Sunny.

Always.

Sunny.

I am one of many who have fallen in love with hilarity-filled crudeness of The Gang on SUNNY, and it would suck to see Dennis go, but it may just be time. Kaitlin Olson (Dee) has her show THE MICK; Charlie Day (Charlie) has a prominent film career; McElhenney will direct his the MINECRAFT movie and; Danny DeVito (Frank) is Danny DeVito. They all have so much going on. Still, I can see the show going on without Howerton if they so choose to do that, but would it still be the same without the Golden God? He never got his modeling career off the ground either. So much for him left to do!
