New Suicide Squad trailer brings all the over-the-top action

Update: A new and outrageous trailer for James Gunn's The Suicide Squad is finally fit for mass consumption and distribution.

As you can see, The Suicide Squad looks like the antihero thrill ride fans of Task Force X deserve. The new footage brings new jokes, bizarre battles, potty humor, and is that a malnourished werewolf? Oh, that's just Weasel, who I'll remind you has killed 27 children, so far. Will he strike again? Probably, if he lives through this movie. That said, my Magic 8 Ball says, "Outlook not so good."

Original Article:

The second trailer for The Suicide Squad has arrived but it's essentially a game of roulette trying to catch a glimpse of it because Warner Bros. has opted to debut the new look in a very interesting fashion.

Warner Bros. launched the trailer by debuting the spot via YouTube preroll ads. So, if you normally get trigger happy when it comes to "Skip Ads", you might miss it but if you're willing to sit through some advertisements to see what James Gunn and his team are offering up, it will be worth the wait.

Having seen the trailer myself, I can say that Idris Elba takes center stage as Robert Dubois/Bloodsport. Although writer and director James Gunn's offbeat humor is on display in the trailer, the tone is slightly more serious when compared to the film's first preview. We get a better idea as to how Viola Davis' Amanda Waller convinces Robert Dubois (Elba) to join this ragtag group of would-be heroes and it looks like how has something to do with her using the emotional connection between him and his daughter Tyla, played by Storm Reid. We also learn that he successfully shot Superman with a Kryptonite bullet, leading to his incarceration. From there we get more about what Amanda Waller needs the Squad to do and it involves following the members of Task Force X after they're sent to the South American island of Corto Maltese to destroy Jotunheim, a Nazi-era prison, and laboratory which held political prisoners and conducted experiments.

In the trailer, we also get to see Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, John Cena as Peacemaker, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Peter Capaldi as Thinker, Alice Braga as Sol Soria, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Michael Rooker as Savant, Nathan Fillion as T.D.K., Sean Gunn as Weasel, Flula Borg as Javelin, Juan Diego Botto as Silvio Luna, and Mayling Ng as Mongal. Steve Agee is also pulling double duty doing the motion capture for King Shark and starring as John Economos, while Sylvester Stallone provides the vocal talent for King Shark.

What I can appreciate about both trailers for the film is that they both set up how tonally different James Gunn's take is going to be than what David Ayer tried to do with 2016's Suicide Squad. The director has said he received zero interference from Warner Bros., which wasn't the case with Ayer, and it shows even in the film's trailers. This is very much a James Gunn movie and it looks like the movie, which is not being described as a sequel or reboot, will benefit greatly from Gunn's creativity.

The Suicide Squad hits screens and HBO Max on August 6, 2021. You can check out some new images from the film below!
