Over the past few months of COVID-19, we've seen the release dates of just about every movie out there pushed back, or in some cases, taken off the theatrical schedule altogether as their studios elected to release them digitally. It seems that THE SPONGEBOB MOVIE: SPONGE ON THE RUN will be the latest movie to join the ranks of theatrical turned home release as Paramount Pictures have announced that the animated film will be released on PVOD early next year.
THE SPONGEBOB MOVIE: SPONGE ON THE RUN had seen numerous release date delays on its road to theaters before finally settling on May 22, 2020; however, COVID-19 had other plans and the release went through more delays before landing on August 7, 2020. This latest push will find the movie released on PVOD in early 2021 before streaming on CBS All Access. Sorry, SpongeBob fans. This latest movie finds SpongeBob and his best friend Patrick Star embarking on an epic adventure to The Lost City of Atlantic City after Spongbob's beloved pet snail Gary is snail-napped. Along the way, they must navigate the delights and dangers on this perilous and hilarious rescue mission as they prove that there's nothing stronger than the power of friendship.
"We are thrilled to have The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run, a premier, first-run movie from one of ViacomCBS’ biggest brands, join CBS All Access’ expanding slate of franchise content from across ViacomCBS," said Marc DeBevoise, chief digital officer at ViacomCBS and president and CEO of ViacomCBS Digital. "This launch will be perfectly timed with our continued expansion and planned rebranding of the service in early 2021, as we welcome SpongeBob and the gang from Bikini Bottom to the service in the biggest way possible." All prior seasons of the SpongeBob Squarepants TV show will also be available on CBS All Access, making it your number-one destination for all things sea-sponge related.
