While we await the release of Last Night in Soho, Edgar Wright as a treat for us with The Sparks Brothers, a documentary that explores the legacy of Sparks, the pop/rock band consisting of brothers Ron and Russell Mael. Over the course of 50 years, the brothers have released 24 albums (with a 25th in the works) and have influenced countless other artists along the way while remaining criminally overlooked themselves. Focus Features have released a new trailer for The Sparks Brothers, which you can check out above.
In addition to Ron and Russell themselves, The Sparks Brothers includes interviews with "Weird Al" Yankovic, Mike Myers, Beck, Neil Gaiman, Flea, Patton Oswalt, Björk, and many others. Our own Chris Bumbray caught the film when it debuted at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and you can check out his glowing review right here.
The official synopsis for The Sparks Brothers:
How can one rock band be successful, underrated, hugely influential, and criminally overlooked all at the same time? Edgar Wright’s debut documentary The Sparks Brothers, which features commentary from celebrity fans Flea, Jane Wiedlin, Beck, Jack Antonoff, Jason Schwartzman, Neil Gaiman, and more, takes audiences on a musical odyssey through five weird and wonderful decades with brothers/bandmates Ron and Russell Mael celebrating the inspiring legacy of Sparks: your favorite band’s favorite band.
The Sparks Brothers will hit theaters on June 18, 2021.
