I think everyone’s still kind of in shock that Mel Gibson is a name being tossed around for SUICIDE SQUAD 2, and while him directing seems like a long shot, it sounds like we have a new contender that’s more DC’s speed. On the latest episode of Popcorn Talk Network’s Meet the Movie Press, hosts Jeff Sneider and Simon Thompson bring up a rumored name that hasn’t been mentioned yet, Jaume Collet-Serra. The man has directed some solid thrillers lately, including NON-STOP, RUN ALL NIGHT and THE SHALLOWS. With his latest film, THE COMMUTER, in post-production, it sounds like Collet-Serra’s schedule is about to be wide open.
I think it’s great that Warner Bros. reached out to Mel Gibson for any movie, let alone SUICIDE SQUAD 2, but Collet-Serra is a name that makes sense. He’ll certainly deliver whatever movie they want on-time and within whatever guidelines they give him. Gibson seems like a man who would want a bit more creative freedom, so I’m hoping if that’s the caveat, WB will work something out. Until then, we’ll have to wait and see!
