The long-awaited sequel to the 1996 blockbuster INDEPENDENCE DAY is doing the release date shuffle yet again, and now we've learned that the second invasion will come a bit earlier than previously announced.
INDEPENDENCE DAY 2 was originally penciled in for a July 3 2015 release but was later pushed back almost a full year, to July 1 2016. Now we've learned that the film has been bumped up a week, now scheduled to hit theaters on June 24th, 2016. If this date holds that means it will arrive the same weekend as Universal Pictures' reboot of THE MUMMY. Will INDEPENDENCE DAY 2 shuffle yet again, or will Universal move THE MUMMY to avoid a potential box-office showdown? We'll have to wait and see.
We're still unsure as to when INDEPENDENCE DAY 2 will start production but we do know that Fox had hired Carter Blanchard to come onboard to write a new draft of the screenplay which is seemingly moving forward without the original films star Will Smith. Roland Emmerich is back in the director's chair.
More on INDEPENDENCE DAY 2 (or ID4EVER, or whatever they choose to title it) as we hear it.
