The Santa Clause vs The Santa Clause 2: Face-Off

In 1994, TV star Tim Allen became a bona fide movie star by nabbing the lead role in The Santa Clause, directed by John Pasquin. Allen plays Scott Calvin, an ordinary man who, in a bizarre twist of fate, inadvertently causes Santa to fall off his roof on Christmas Eve and finds himself magically recruited to take his place. The film would prove to be a smash success at the box-office and it seems that audiences were taken with this divorced dad transforming into the new Santa.

You would think with a massive hit like this that Disney would be quick to green-light a sequel, yet it would take almost a decade before the second instalment, The Santa Clause 2, hit theaters in 2002. That film centres on Scott Calvin trying to get married by Christmas Eve or else he’ll lose his title of Old Saint Nick. Sure, there’s also The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause but we don’t really like to talk about that one. Besides leading an entire generation of children to misspell Santa Claus, these films have become required viewing material for every holiday movie marathon. And with Tim Allen donning the red suit again in the release of the Disney+ limited series, The Santa Clauses, we thought now would be a wonderful time to revisit the first two chapters in this yuletide franchise. However, which movie deserves to be on the nice list and which deserves a lump of coal in its stocking this year? There’s only one way to find out… FACE OFF!

This episode of FACE-OFF was written and edited by Matthew Hacunda, narrated by Shawn Knippelberg, produced by Adam Walton and Chris Bumbray and executive produced by Berge Garabedian.
