The Sandman: season 2 of Netflix series starts filming this summer

After spending decades in development hell, a live-action adaptation of the Neil Gaiman comic book series The Sandman actually made it into production and released into the world as a Netflix series last August. (Read our review HERE.) Three months later, Netflix ordered more of The Sandman… and while this new batch of episodes isn’t officially being referred to as season 2, we’ll call it that because there’s nothing else to call it at this time. And if you’re a fan of The Sandman who’s worried that it’s going to take a while for the new episodes to arrive, we have some promising news to share today, as it doesn’t look like it’s going to be a long wait. Cast member Mason Alexander Park, who plays Desire on the show, has revealed that filming on the next batch of episodes will begin this summer!

Park said: “Netflix has not gone on record calling it a season 2 on purpose. And so from now on and in the future and in perpetuity, until the end of universe, will not refer to it as season 2. Until, you know, we know what it is. There is more Sandman coming in a really cool way, and it can take many forms. We’re starting shooting in the summer, and we’re gonna tackle the next huge chunk of stories in however long that might take. And I am really excited to share the format of what that might be with everybody, eventually.

When Netflix ordered the new episodes, they said, “The Sandman will return with new episodes based on multiple volumes of the Neil Gaiman graphic novel to explore even more stories of the Endless.

Described as “a rich, character-driven blend of myth and dark fantasy”, The Sandman stars Tom Sturridge and has the following synopsis:

When the Sandman, aka Dream — the powerful cosmic being who controls all our dreams — is unexpectedly captured and held prisoner for over a century, he must journey across different worlds and timelines to fix the chaos his absence has caused.

Sturridge is joined in the cast by Boyd Holbrook, Patton Oswalt, Vivienne Acheampong, Gwendoline Christie, Charles Dance, Jenna Coleman, David Thewlis, Stephen Fry, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Donna Preston, Vanesu Samunyai (formerly known as “Kyo Ra”), John Cameron Mitchell, Asim Chaudhry, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Joely Richardson, Niamh Walsh, Sandra James Young, Razane Jammal, Mark Hamill, and Park.

The Sandman was developed by Gaiman, Allan Heinberg, and David S. Goyer. All three serve as executive producers on the series, and Heinberg is also the showrunner. The series is produced by Warner Bros. Television.
