The Sandman teaser trailer reveals August premiere date for Neil Gaiman series

Adaptations of Neil Gaiman‘s The Sandman comic book series have spent decades in development hell – but now one has finally made it into production at the Netflix streaming service, and the newly released teaser trailer embedded above reveals that fans of The Sandman will finally get the chance to see its characters brought to life in live-action on August 5th.

Described as “a rich, character-driven blend of myth and dark fantasy”, the ten episode first season of The Sandman stars Tom Sturridge and has the following synopsis:

When the Sandman, aka Dream — the powerful cosmic being who controls all our dreams — is unexpectedly captured and held prisoner for over a century, he must journey across different worlds and timelines to fix the chaos his absence has caused.

Sturridge is joined in the cast by Boyd Holbrook, Patton Oswalt, Vivienne Acheampong, Gwendoline Christie, Charles Dance, Jenna Coleman, David Thewlis, Stephen Fry, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Mason Alexander Park, Donna Preston, Vanesu Samunyai (formerly known as “Kyo Ra”), John Cameron Mitchell, Asim Chaudhry, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Joely Richardson, Niamh Walsh, Sandra James Young, Razane Jammal, and Mark Hamill.

Hamill is the most recent cast member to be announced. Netflix says he will “voice beloved character Merv Pumpkinhead.”

The Sandman was developed by Gaiman, Allan Heinberg, and David S. Goyer. All three serve as executive producers on the series, and Heinberg is also the showrunner. The series is produced by Warner Bros. Television.

I have heard a lot about The Sandman over the years, but have never read any of the comic books myself. This Netflix series look interesting to me, though. I’ll probably give it a try sometime.
