It’s been a hot minute since we heard an update about an upcoming remake of The Saint starring Regé-Jean Page (Bridgerton, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves). Still, Deadline is here to blow the dust off this project with word that Doug Liman is officially directing The Saint remake. In addition to his starring role, Page will executive produce with Lorenzo DiBonaventura, Brad Krevoy, and the late Robert Evans.
Plot details for The Saint remake remain a mystery. However, Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani are working on the script. The Saint is based on the 1920s book series that follows Simon Templar, also known as The Saint. Often described as a Robin Hood-like criminal and thief for hire, Simon can usually be found traveling the globe and looking for adventure. As I said, plot details on the new project are confidential at this time, though sources indicate that the team is working around the clock to reimagine the character.
Known for directing fan-favorite films like Swingers, Go, Edge of Tomorrow, and The Bourne Identity, Liman is a fantastic candidate to get behind the camera for an updated take on the classic character previously played by Roger Moore in the 1960s UK TV series, and Val Kilmer in Phillip Noyce’s 1997 action-packed classic. With the strikes being over and Liman ready to lend his talents to The Saint, fans of the property can expect this to be a top priority for Paramount.
Liman recently wrapped production for a Road House remake starring Jake Gyllenhaal as Dalton, a “cooler” hired to help clean up The Double Deuce, one of the rowdiest bars in Missouri. The original film starring Patrick Swayze has become a cult favorite over the years, and there have been various attempts at remaking the movie. Prime Video says the new take will star Gyllenhaal as a former UFC fighter who takes a job as a bouncer at a roadhouse in the Florida Keys. He “soon discovers that not everything is what it seems in this tropical paradise.”
Two-time UFC champion Conor McGregor joins Gyllenhaal for his acting debut, with Billy Magnussen, Daniela Melchior, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Lukas Gage, Hannah Love Lanier, Travis Van Winkle, B.K. Cannon, Arturo Castro, Dominique Columbus, Beau Knapp, and Bob Menery.
Are you a fan of The Saint? I once dated someone who was obsessed with Val Kilmer’s version. I wonder how she feels about Regé-Jean Page taking on the role. I’ll ask her, as we’re still great friends. Are you excited about Liman boarding Paramount‘s The Saint remake? Let us know in the comments section below.
